Iota
Project brief: To design a kitchen with an emphasis on human factors.
Our goal was to provide all of the essentials of a kitchen using the minimum ergonomic dimensions. First step was to determine which features of a kitchen are most important. In the first attempt (shown below) the design was comprised of standard sizes of equipment The two main highlights of the first attempt were the use of a modular refrigerator that allowed the most individual customization and the lower height of the sink, which allows the most natural angle of the arms while cleaning.
After the first critique it was made clear that the design could be pushed much further to maximize space efficiency. Research was then done to find the smallest examples of the basic appliances and then take those dimensions and arrange the appliances in a way that creates an efficient kitchen workflow. The target audience for the design was a bachelor living in a small space which justified a dishwasher that only washed a handful of dishes. It is also important to this target audience that they can entertain guests so the Iota includes a work space that raises up to be a bar top as well as a conversation starting design.
